LET'S GET BACK TO RACING,

BACK TO KARTING!

2017 City of Melbourne Titles Race Report

Almost 300 drivers entered to race in this years 33rd running of the annual City of Melbourne Titles race meeting, held at the Go Kart Club of Victoria at the Corner of Todd Road & Cook Street, Port Melbourne on .

With the large number of drivers racing pit tents could be seen lined all the way up the main straight to the top of the hill and around the back straight, which provided a great buzz and atmosphere trackside. The pits was a hive of activity throughout the weekend and many spectators took up most of the viewing spots for a great look at all of the racing action.

The weather provided a variation of conditions for drivers across both days with rain hitting the circuit for a small part on Saturday and Sunday mornings, requiring many of the classes to run the wet tyres but as predicted this cleared away and allowed the finals to be held in warm and glorious sunny conditions which were perfect for Karting.

KA4 Junior Heavy class result

In the final of the KA4 Junior Heavy class #5 Jordyn Sinni would start out of pole along side #48 Nathan Skelton with #9 Nathan Williams starting 3rd.

Into turn 1 for the first time Williams got a fraction deep under brakes allowing the #85 kart of Dant’e Naselli to come down the inside, with Williams running out of road and taking to the grass on the exit falling towards to the back of the pack.

Once the race settled down Sinni had a great dual with Skelton with multiple passes at the end of the main straight, while Ballarat driver Jordan Malcolm was showing great speed in 3rd spot.

After the rough start Williams hadn’t yet given up on a good result and charged his way through the pack, setting the fastest lap of the race and eventually catching and passing Malcom and Sinni in the later stages to finish in 2nd position with Skelton taking the victory by 4.9 seconds ahead of Williams and Sinni 3rd.

TAG 125 Light class result

A huge field of 49 drivers had entered for the TaG 125 Light class for this meeting which meant that 2 divisions would race across the heats to decide who would take their place at the start of the 36 driver final.

In qualifying 1 second covered the top 25 drivers with newly crowned Victorian State Champion #94 Bradley Jenner (GKCV) setting the fastest time 1.84 tenths of a second head of local GKCV driver #14 Leigh Nicolaou and GKCV driver #52 Matthew Beninca 3rd fastest.

For the final Jenner would start out of pole, with local GKCV driver #15 Matthew Wall on his outside, #14 Leigh Nicolaou starting 3rd, #96 David Sera out of p4, supercar driver Nic Percat having a consistent run in the heats with 4th and 5th finishes starting the final from p5 and local driver #52 Matthew Beninca starting 6th.

After Karting Victoria President Russell White spotted a spots a nose cone clamp down into turn 1, he cleaned it up and made sure the surface for perfect for the start and after the 3rd attempt the race was underway and it was the the outside row of Wall and Sera who got the best launch with Jenner dropping back to 3rd into turn 1.

Sera lead Wall in the opening laps but soon Wall was able to get a run down the main straight and overtook Sera heading into turn 1 and on the next lap Jenner repeated the move and took over 2nd place with Sera dropping back to 4th behind Nicolaou.

By lap 5 the closeness of the drivers in this class could be seen by the almost 20 kart train of drivers making their way down the main straight but soon Wall, Jenner, Nicolaou, Sera and Beninca would start to pull a small margin on the field and Jenner would be back in the lead and Wall dropping to 3rd behind Nicolaou.

At mid race Beninca would find himself in a spin while battling for 5th position rejoining but dropping to the back of the field.

For the remainder of the race Jenner was able to maintain a single kart length over Nicolaou and went on to take the victory 2 tenths ahead of Nicolaou who set the fastest lap of the race, Wall finishing in 3rd just 5 kart lengths back, Sera in 4th 1.9 seconds away from the lead and South Australian Morgan Feast made up few positions in the final to come home in 5th.
