Just over 150 drivers competed at the penultimate Round 5 of the 2017 Golden Power Series held at the Sun Centre Kart Way, Swan Hill Kart Club at the weekend with competitors also using the meeting as good practice towards the biggest end of year race in the Victoria, the 2017 “Black Plate” Victorian State Cup meeting which will be held at the club from the 1st to the 3rd of December.
2 days of competition was held in sunny conditions at the fast flowing Swan Hill circuit which features a driver favourite, the unique fast banked corner nicknamed the “Thunderdome”, with qualifying followed by 4 heats of racing and a final that would decide the result from the meeting.
It was great racing across the classes throughout the weekend with the unique layout of the circuit providing a challenge to get the right setup for drivers, with many of the classes unusually having one driver who was able to get everything together for the weekend and take a clean sweep of victories in those respected classes.
The series now has a break over the coming months and fires up again for an exciting final round at the Eastern Lions Kart Club on the 4th and 5th of November. We hope to see everyone there for what will be a huge end of series meeting!
KA4 Junior Light class
A great field of 19 drivers in the KA4 Junior Light class and it was #96 Bailey Collins that continued his good form this year by setting the fastest time in qualifying but red plate Australasian Title holder #23 Jai Stephenson and #80 Nicholas Sacco were also on the pace throughout the weekend and gave Collins a run for his money. Collins winning heats 2, setting a new class lap record and winning heat 3 but dropping down to finish 8th in the final setting a new lap record trying to get his way back through the field, while it was another win on the board for #23 Jai Stephenson with #80 Nicholas Sacco finishing 2nd and #94 Kobi Williams taking the final step of the podium.

Red plate Australasian Kart Titles winner #9 Caleb Spence showed too much speed and experience for his rivals in the Cadet 9 class sweeping the whole weekend, while Go-Kart Club of Victoria P plate driver #8P Lewis Armstrong had an excellent drive to finish 2nd, likewise Albury driver #89 Anthony Alessi who took 3rd while setting a new class track record in heat 1, with Gippsland P plate driver #70P Cody Boys also putting in a great effort in one of his first races to come home in 4th.

A big field of 18 drivers took the starters lights in the TaG 125 Restricted Medium class and the local drivers used their track knowledge to their advantage with #7 Daniel Fedele taking the clean sweep of fastest qualifier, all 4 heats and final victories while setting the fastest lap. Fellow Swan Hill driver #45 Haydn Stewart got off to a slow start in the heats across the weekend after finishing 8th and 12th in the first 2 heats but fought his way through the remaining races to come through to finish 2nd in the final while #28 Beau Humphrey (Bendigo Kart Club) was consistent across the weekend and picked up 3rd. New P plate driver #4 Mitch Wilson put in an awesome effort to finish in 4th of the 18 kart final.

Go-Kart Club of Victoria and red plate Australasian Kart Tile holder #43 Taine Venables had a strong showing at last weekends City of Melbourne Titles in the KA3 Senior Light class and he kept this going at Swan Hill setting a blazing lap time of 35.750 to secure pole position and going on to win the first 3 heats of the weekend. Rochester driver #86 Nicholas Trebilcock wasn’t too far behind Venables early in the weekend and got his kart hooked up for when it counted most going on to take victory in heat 4 and the final while setting a new class lap record, with Venables second and Oakleigh / Eastern Lions member #27 Jack Martin driving very consistently across the weekend to finish in 3rd.

13 drivers lined up in the TaG 125 Restricted Heavy class and it was #18 Ryan Van Ree (Albury-Wodonga Kart Club) who came out on top in the final after winning heats 2 and 3, with #16 Travis Chapman (Gippsland Kart Club) also challenging at the front across the weekend after winning heats 1 and 4 coming home in 2nd in the final, with #55 Cameron Austin (Bendigo Kart Club) putting in a great drive to take home 3rd. Rochester driver #11 Martin Golledge who was the fastest qualifier was also in contention across the weekend holding down the 2nd spot in the heat across most of the weekend but slipped down to 7th in the final setting a new class track record as he tried to fight his way back to the front.

In the 10 driver KA3 Junior field it was Albury driver #72 Zach Van Zanten who set the fastest time with a lap of 35.662 in qualifying but coming off an unlucky crash in the final of last weekends City of Melbourne Titles it was the #96 kart of Gippsland driver Samuel Downing who once he hit the front never looked back and went on to sweep the weekend with victory in all heats and the final. #72 Zach Van Zanten taking 2nd after putting in a great drive in the final recovering after finishing the heats in 2nd 8th, 6th and 9th while #2 Declan Somers who was also running second for a majority of the weekend came home in 3rd.

Cadet 12 class
The biggest field of the weekend was the 20 driver Cadet 12 class and Geelong driver #5 Brodie Thomson just edged out Gippsland driver #43 Owen Kemp by under a tenth of a second for pole position. After finishing the first heat in 2nd Thomson went on to take victory in the remaining heats and took victory in the final, with Kemp recovering from a DNF in heat 2 and 6th in heat 3 to come home strong and finish 2nd setting a new class lap record in heat 4 along the way, while Albury driver #10 Jordan Chapman put in a great drive running in the top 4 across the weekend to come home on the final step of the podium 3rd.
