One of Victoria’s original Go Karters passed away on January 15th. Clyde Lindstrom was a President, founding and life member of Easter Lions Go Kart Club, having started racing in 1959 and built his first Kart in 1961. Clyde and his three sons have been actively involved since then, with son Grant the proprietor of Pro-Karting and grandsons Jace, Jordie and Adam all still involved.
Clyde lived through and helped mould the early days of Karting in Victoria, when his engineering skills were a big advantage. In the 1970’s Clyde designed and built some amazing inventions including a fuel injection system, two piece rear axle (both of which were subsequently outlawed), twin with both engines on one side, water cooling an air cooled engine, casting his own pistons and so on. He had one of the first Rotary valve engines in Australia when he imported a Komet from Italy in the late 1960’s, and built his own chassis’, seats, steering wheels and fuel tanks.
Some of Clyde’s proudest memories were the numerous National and State titles he and his three sons won in Karts he built and tuned, and especially those meetings when all of them won trophies, like one Victorian state titles where the three boys won the premier senior, junior and sub-junior classes. |
